La Deuxieme

I went to the Med Unit a few months ago for a routine well-check while Chris happened to be flying somewhere over Eastern Canada at the time–3 hours into a 15 hour flight back to Delhi.

Privacy is a bit of an aspirational goal when one lives, works, and receives medical care all within the space of about 200 feet, but I didn’t really mind that day as I walked back into the waiting room that day to find my friend sitting there, her jaw nearly scrapping the floor. “You’re pregnant???”

It’s nice to have friends whom know you well enough to know just how shocked and thrilled you will be by your own positive pregnancy test.  I was indeed shocked.  Shocked and ecstatically happy and suddenly aware of how excruciatingly slowly time passes when one is waiting for one’s husband to fly across the two continents and the Atlantic ocean.

For months, my friend had been listening to me moan speak calmly about how much we wanted to give Will a little brother or sister.  So, with Chris completely unreachable, we celebrated together in the waiting room for a few minutes before I went home to watch Will (and the clock) and she went off to go deliver a baby of her own.

We’re due in the very early days of 2014 which means that when I wrote about chasing Will outdoors through the inferno that is Delhi in early June, I was quite possibly even more miserable than I let on here on this blog.  Of course, now that we are past the first trimester, past the fiery early summer months, its hard to remember why those few weeks were so difficult. We’re getting a baby out of the deal and that’s what counts.

For the second tour and second pregnancy in a row, we are living in a country in which it is illegal for the ultrasound technician to reveal the gender of the baby. Female infanticide and abortion are still very serious issues here in India. We didn’t leave the country to do an ultrasound this time so, while I have my educated guesses, for now all we can really say is that it’s definitely a baby in there and we are very, very happy about that.
